About

the institute

The KJEC Institute is a free 12-day intensive educational program located in Honolulu, Hawai’i that brings together 20 university students from Korea and Japan. The program aims to  develop students’ leadership skills and cross-cultural understanding using English as a global language. The program collaborates with the East-West Center located on the campus of the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa in effort to help prepare students who may have never traveled internationally with the knowledge, resources, and skills to pursue study abroad or international other opportunities in the future.

The overall theme of the program is “Think globally, act locally” as the curriculum and experience will teach students about international social justice issues and support them in developing a community project to enact in their own local communities.

Are you a university student with a passion for English and an interest in becoming a local and global leader? Read more about the student eligibility and click below to apply.

why

Hawai’i

The KJEC Institute selected Hawai’i as our location because beyond the natural beauty, it is home to a number of strong multicultural communities and has historic ties to both Korea and Japan that make it a symbolic destination for learning about cross-cultural communication and collaboration. In addition, Hawai’i is home to the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa and one of the Institute’s community partners, the East-West Center, both these institutions provide opportunities and resources that will help us create a meaningful experience for participants.

what our

alumni say

Here’s what some of our previous students have to say about their time with the KJEC Institute.

In the beginning, I thought that the leadership classes would be a big challenge as I perceived myself as having limited leadership skills. I learned that there are many types of leaders and we could all be one of our own. As we are all different, we also have different ways of executing things. Learning about this fact eliminates the fear that I used to have for the role leader while encouraging me that I could be one.

Cultural understanding between different nationality is essential to build genuine friendships.

The most valuable lesson I learned from the program is the power of actions. I started to realize this at the very beginning … I did not expect myself for receiving such a wonderful opportunity to go to Hawai’i but I still applied thinking at least I give it a try. Lucky enough, I was able to participate and made wonderful relationships and connections. I realized that although it is difficult and challenging something from the scratch can turn into something meaningful..

It was great opportunity for Japanese students to present in front of audience because we hardly have classes to deliver presentation at university.
