welcome to the

KJEC experience

24 participants in the program come together, spending 5-days in Japan and 5-days in South Korea, learning through our experiential and project-based curriculum.

Throughout the program participants will attend daily English classes, interactive leadership workshops, and cultural excursions. Programming will be facilitated in a scaffolded English immersive environment to challenge students outside their comfort zone and utilize English as a global language to help develop lifelong friendships and community.

The Experience invites Korean and Japanese high schools to apply to participate.

Program

Goals

The KJEC Experience is designed to inspire students and help them start their journeys of becoming global leaders. Often KJEC Experience is students’ first opportunity to travel abroad, so KJEC helps teach students the value of international travel and the importance of global collaboration to address social issues. KJEC works with students to grow their self confidence and personal and professional skills, while practicing their English skills and learning more about American, Japanese, and Korean culture. Most importantly, through KJEC Experience students and teachers develop new friendships that extend beyond country and culture and enable everyone to learn from one another.

english skills

The Experience cultivates an English immersive environment, where students choose to use English in and out of the classroom in a fun and meaningful way. Through the program students take risks and challenge one another as they practice their speaking and listening skills.

leadership development

What makes a good leader? What does it mean to be civically engaged? Much of our time is spent asking these questions and studying about how we can use our skills to make positive changes in local and global communities. Students take what they’ve learned and apply it in their final project presentation focused on a social issue.

cross-cultural exchange

We split our time between Japan and South Korea, so students get a chance to learn from their peers and practice cultural ambassadorship. Our excursions, group activities, and guided reflections are all meant to help students challenge stereotypes and learn to be open-minded and critical thinkers.

program

activities

Some of our program activities include:

English classes occur daily throughout the program and are focused on activating students’ knowledge and promoting dialogue and conversation. Class topics include values, stereotypes, and expressing opinions.

Leadership Workshops will help provide students professional development and a foundational understanding of leadership studies. Topics include: what is leadership, leadership styles, conflict management, and communication styles.

Team challenges are designed to help students apply the leadership lessons they learn. The team challenge setting will help facilitate student bonding and relationship building and promote an interactive learning environment.

Cultural activities aim to teach students about one another and help us examine our commonalities and differences. These cultural activities will be conducted both formally through teaching traditional games, cooking classes, and other fun activities.

This activity is important because it will enable our students to understand the interconnected history of the US, Japan, and Korea and explore important historical and cultural sites in each location.

Students will participate in 1 service project to engage in the local community. Before and after the service students will engage in activities to learn more about the local issue and brainstorm project ideas they can do to help to enact positive change.

The final project will be developed to incorporate all three elements of the camp: English conversation, leadership development, and cultural understanding. Students will have the choice to pick 1 or 2 projects and then work together to put their plan into action. And on the final day of the camp each group will showcase their project and talk about their experience.

The U.S. Embassy provides grants to organizations such as KJEC to help students have opportunities learn English as a global language, learn about American values, and learn the importance of international collaboration.

KJEC works with only 4 schools each year to create a small, but strong community among the participating teachers and students. In the future KJEC hopes to be able to work with more schools each year.

KJEC prioritizes selecting schools that permit both their native English teacher and Korean / Japanese teacher of English in attending the program alongside their students. However, KJEC encourages all eligible high schools to apply as we may be able to work with you and the school circumstances.

KJEC supports the selected schools and teachers in the student application process. KJEC aims to recruit students who are motivated to improve their English skills, interested in cross-cultural exchange, and who have previously never been abroad or limited international experiences.

KJEC will cover the cost of students and teachers transportation, housing, meals, and excursions. Students will be expected to pay for a passport fee if needed and spending / souvenir money.

Classes will go from 9am – 2pm with a combination of excursions and experiential activities in the afternoon and the evening will include team building games and time for reflection.
